About the Open Library

At Centre for Learning, we have an open library both in concept and reality. This means that there is free and open access to all material and resources, at all times of day and night, and throughout the year. Mutual trust and shared responsibility provide the ground from which this library functions. The rules and conventions of library interaction evolve out of a sense of co-operation, consideration and care for the community as a whole.

A LIBRARY IN THE MOUNTAINS!

“Can you help us set up a library?” was the request from Chirag School in the Kumaon Himalayas at Uttarakhand. “On a clear day, you can see the entire Nanda Devi range, as well as Trishul and Panchachuli from around the corner,” the letter added. What was I waiting for? An assignment dear to my heart and a chance of a sight of the Himalayas.

Just picture a small Government school with children from very poor families. Then sketch in a team of extraordinary teachers and a headmaster, who function in amazing harmony. Another visit to Guddahatti

Two days ago, I went again to the Govt. school at Guddahatti. The children were enjoying their midday meal but were also eager to begin the interaction.

It's catching!!!

Great to be back in this format which makes me feel I am chatting and not lecturing. I do hope others will do so too.

After the momentous conference at CFL in December, Sunila, CFL’s present librarian and I have visited a Govt. school at Gudahatty.

In Brief

The Puffin Guide to Childrens Literature. Seems like an invaluable book for school librarians to have. Title may not be exact!

Life of Jim Corbett. Hunter and Conservationist. Rupa Publishers. Anyone who has read Corbett’s riveting stories must read this to understand more about the human being. Age 12 and above.

The Boy With The Striped Pyjamas by John Boynton. A story of a young teenager set during the Holocaust. Very sensitively handled and the author has thought a lot about his young readership and what is right for them. Age 13 and above. — #

Teacher by Frank McCourt author of Angela’s Ashes and ‘Tis. Both these books have been very popular with our 14 year olds and above. — #
